POKOTABI / Bonnard
珈琲処ボナール
Bonnard is a relaxed kissaten, or traditional Japanese coffee shop, in Ueno. From carefully brewed blends and the signature Ambre De Reine to cake sets with a homemade feel, this is a place to leave the bustle of the city behind and take your time.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Step through the door and the noise of the street seems to fall away. Porcelain cups are arranged with care, and the calm interior invites you to settle in. On a Ueno street corner, Bonnard retains the character of a classic Japanese coffee shop—a place to linger over the aroma and flavour of a cup of coffee.
Coffee is at the heart of the menu, with beans ground to order and each cup prepared with care. The regular blend offers a straightforward balance of bitterness and acidity; for a deeper, fuller flavour, there is also a rich blend. The cold drinks have their own appeal: the Dutch-style iced blend has a clear, rounded flavour, while the layered sweetness of Ambre De Reine draws its own following.
For a leisurely treat, the cake set lets you choose a pairing to suit the moment. Mille-crêpe cake, layered with cream, has a moderate sweetness that works well with bitter coffee. The apple cake, with generous pieces of fruit that retain their texture, is another favourite. There is also Japanese chestnut Mont Blanc, cheesecake and even a hot dog with a coarsely ground sausage, making it easy to put together a combination to match your mood.
There is plenty beyond coffee, too, including cold-brew Darjeeling and Earl Grey. Table service adds to the unhurried feel. Bonnard stays open until 21:30 on weekdays and until 20:00 on Sundays, making it an easy place to wind down after a walk or pause for a quiet moment in the evening.
